ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Wei Sen Wong received his Ph.D. from Northeastern University under Professor Barry Karger in 1978. He immediately joined Shell Development Company and was in charge of the GPC laboratory for more than 18 years. He has been with Malvern/Viscotek since 1997 and he is currently the Manger of Analytical Services.
APPLICATION OF TRIPLE/TETRA DETECTION GPC FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF SYNTHETIC & NATURAL POLYMERS
Wei Sen Wong, Malvern Instruments
Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) also known as Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC), is a very popular analytical tool for characterizing synthetic and Natural polymers. Driven by the need to more fully understand an increasingly complex array of polymers and polymer systems, many users have implemented the technique of Triple Detection to obtain absolute molecular weight, molecular size and structure information. In this seminar, a new analytical technique called FIPA will be introduced. Impact of FIPA on QA/QC operations will be illustrated. With the recent introduction of Viscotek Model TDA 305 Tetra Detector Array (UV/PDA, Light Scattering, Refractive Index and Viscometer), it is now also possible to measure accurate molecular parameters of heterogeneous copolymers. Examples of Styrenic Copolymers and Pegylated Proteins will be given. This seminar will show the excellent results possible with our new High Temperature (HT) GPC system for various polyolefin samples. Molecular weight distribution and branching data are of special interest to polyolefin research as well as product and process specifications. Features on instrument design and sample preparation technologies necessary for reliable high temperature operation will also be emphasized. In addition, this newly developed HT sample processor (Vortex) has allowed us to extend our Dilute Solution Viscometry (DSV) technique to include Polyolefins. Excellent precision and accuracy studies will be shown for this exclusive Malvern HTDSV capability. Finally, we will review our well established Xylene Soluble (XS) technology when coupled with HTGPC and HTDSV form a significant single vendor Polyolefin Characterization Capability Suite.
